I have been creating works into the New Year as a way to understand the past and bridge the present with a possible future. The explorations here have always inspired me and becomes a ritual exploration taken further throughout the year.
Sight, Sound, Smell: Sensuality
Wrapped under a sensual cashmere blanket with the sweet smell of oud resin gathering friends together watching the fireworks in central park, the blanket becomes a canopy of childlike playful musings and joinings of touch smell and sight.
Health + Binding
marble, twine, paper, tape, weight measuring hook
using the weight of marble, binding twine using classic decorative and functional knots to envelop the weight of a letter from my health insurance with a little note on my experiences and thoughts.
enamel on cotton rag paper
using water to hold the weight of enamel and casting into the water thoughts for a new future while the enamel slowly dissipates and creates rainbows of light
The Story of the Prayer Beads
Flip book animation drawn on a boat in the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, NY with some lovely friends by a cozy wood burning stove for warmth, and side parable of vagina dentata.
Wearable sculpture from found torn T-shirts, 20″x20″
Using traditional folk basket weaving techniques to weave a mandala based vest referencing hypnotic suggestion, shamanic practices, the wearer of this vest is empowered with the inner eye, the conventional (tshirt) is transformed into an unconventional armour. This has lead to future weavings which has lead me to discover my power creature for 2009 – the spider, weaving the past to the present.
What started out as a small innocent New Years Eve dance party turns into a rebirth of disco’s greatest smashing at midnight – a giant golden cock pinyata sends out an eruption of condoms. Performance by Red dancing to her latest song hit “Everyday Sunshine,” a song that sent her feet into high heels dancing and painting her body like a slip n slide game with glitter. She spent hours in the bath tub at the party trying to clean it all!
Using a series of double layer slide projections from my Heartlands journey I decided to wash them out with paint and reflections of light while strapping on my guitar and serenading the light around.
Sand, Sea, Sky
Performance on the beach w/ fabric, Oahu, HI
A drawing with sand on sewn camouflage fabric made by incorporating Hawaiian fabric w/ camouflage fabric to relate to the dominant military presence in Oahu. Performance incorporated local Polynesian rituals on this fabric by the beach; eventually the ocean carried away the fabric.
